Increased distance and range of motion of the thoracic spine

[The science behind increasing your driving distance] "Thoracic spine range of motion" over muscle training. How to create a swing that will fly in Nakameguro

"I want to hit the ball farther" is a common desire among beginners and single-player players. Many people try to increase their driving distance by buying a new driver or engaging in strength training, but the most efficient and reliable way to do this is to maximize their own "body range of motion."

Particularly important is the movement of the bones in the upper back called the thoracic vertebrae.

The secret to distance is the "torsion difference" In a golf swing, the source of power is the "torsion (torsion difference)" between the upper and lower body. At the top of the swing, the lower body is firmly stabilized and the upper body rotates deeply, building up energy like a rubber band being pulled tight. However, many modern people have become hunched over due to desk work, and the thoracic vertebrae are stiff. If the thoracic vertebrae do not rotate, the body will try to rotate the "lower back (lumbar vertebrae)" instead. However, structurally, the lumbar vertebrae are bones for stability, not rotation. Forcing the rotation not only reduces distance, but can also cause lower back pain.

How does movement of the thoracic spine change your swing?

  1. Deeper top: Your shoulders will naturally be deeper, maximizing the swing arc (size of the circle).

  2. Eliminates swinging with your hands: You will be able to hit the ball by rotating your body, which will naturally increase your head speed.

  3. Improved repeatability: Increased flexibility makes it easier to achieve the same trajectory every shot.

At our salon, we don't just stretch, we also loosen the fascia that surrounds stiff muscles, creating a state where they can rotate more easily at the skeletal level. For all you golfers in the Nakameguro area who feel like your body has become stiff and your driving distance has decreased recently, your muscles aren't dead yet. They're just dormant. With our conditioning, you can improve your personal best driving distance.
